Nepal has been facing political instability for more than a decade, in such a situation, a party or coalition will need 138 seats to get a clear majority in the house. Nepali Congress alone has won 48 seats. Its allies CPN-Maoist Center and CPN-Unified Socialist have won 16 and 10 seats. Democratic Socialist and National People’s Front got two and one seat respectively. All of them are part of the ruling coalition.
Nepal away from clear majority
The CPN-UML-led opposition alliance led by former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli got 46 seats. CPN-UML’s allies Rashtriya Prajatantra Party and Janata Samajwadi Party have won five and three seats respectively. The newly formed Rashtriya Swatantra Party has won seven seats. Nagrik Unmukti Party, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party and Janmat Party got 3, 1 and 1 seats respectively. Independents and others got 13 seats.
Prachanda silent on Oli’s proposal to form the government
Elections to the House of Representatives and seven provincial assemblies were held on Sunday. The counting of votes started on Monday. Meanwhile, amidst the counting of parliamentary elections in Nepal, top leaders have started efforts to explore the possibilities of government formation. Nepal has been facing political instability for more than a decade. Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML) President K.P. On Thursday, Oli called Pushkamal Dahal Prachanda, chairman of the CPN-Maoist Centre, and the two leaders congratulated each other on being elected to the House of Representatives. Prime Minister and President of Nepali Congress Sher Bahadur Deuba also called Prachanda and Oli and congratulated them for their victory. All the three leaders have won the election of the House of Representatives. A source close to Prachanda said that during a telephonic conversation, Oli offered Prachanda to form an alliance to form a new government.
