of Himachal Pradesh Politics Those days also came in me, when it was understood that now the Congress is over. In the 1990 elections, the Congress was reduced to nine seats in the state. At the same time, the Bharatiya Janata Party got 46 seats. However, when the re-election was held in 1993, the whole game was reversed. Fully assured of victory, the BJP lost badly and came down to eight seats. In 1993, Virbhadra Singh became the Chief Minister of Himachal again.
In the 1993 elections, there was a tremendous storm of Congress. By winning 46 seats in the 1990 elections, even Shanta Kumar, who became the Chief Minister, lost his election. This was a big reversal. Veterans like Shanta Kumar were defeated by Man Chand Rana of the Congress party. Apart from Shantakumar, many veterans including his minister Nagin Chandra Pal had lost the election.
Shanta Kumar moved to center politics
After this defeat, Shanta Kumar got out of the politics of the state and went to the politics of the Center. He never became an MLA after that. In his place, in 1998, Prem Kumar Dhumal became the Chief Minister of the coalition government formed with Sukhram’s party Hivik. Taking a lesson from the defeat in 1990, the Congress party took back veteran Congress leaders and former Chief Ministers Thakur Ram Lal and Vijay Singh Mankotia, who had gone to the Janata Dal, into the Congress. The result of this unity was that the Congress was able to win the 1993 elections.
Bhindda and Jagdev Chand had saved their seats in the storm of Congress
Jagat Prakash Nadda, the current national president of the BJP and Jagdev Chand, Shantakumar’s staunch opponent in the party at that time, managed to save their seats in the 1993 Congress storm. This was the first election of the current Chief Minister Jairam Thakur, but Jairam Thakur lost that election. Apart from Nadda and Jag Dev Chand, only Ravindra Singh Ravi, Kishan Kapoor, Virendra Kumar from Paragpur, Kumar, Rakesh Verma from Theog, Ram Das Malangad and Ishwar Das Dhiman were able to win their seats in these elections. In other places, the BJP’s hand was cleared. Leftist MLA Rakesh Singha reached the assembly for the first time on a CPI(M) ticket by winning the election from Shimla seat.
