Amidst this claim of the rebels contesting as independents, the road to victory is not looking easy for the official candidate of the ruling party. The path has become difficult for BJP candidate Ashwin Patel after six-time BJP MLA Madhu Srivastava rebelled and entered the independent election fray. BJP’s Vadodara district president Ashwin Patel has been given ticket in place of Madhu Srivastava.
Along with Srivastava, the contest has become interesting as BJP leader Dharmendra Singh Vaghela turned rebel and entered the election fray. Both Srivastava and Vaghela have the image of Dabang and Bahubali leader. Though the BJP has put all its might behind its official candidate Patel, the possibility of vote splitting cannot be ruled out. Patel, who comes from a relatively modest background, is facing a tough fight from the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), apart from two BJP rebels, in a multi-cornered contest.
Damage can be caused by rebels
In Vadodara, BJP Kisan Morcha general secretary Utsav Bhai Parikh said, “BJP is more important than the candidate and we are focusing on ensuring the victory of the official candidate.” Expressing confidence of victory, he said that out of 65 per cent Kshatriya voters in Waghodia, 50 will vote. Congress benefits from BJP rebels
On the other hand, Congress is upbeat after the presence of BJP rebels and is expected to benefit from this electoral situation. Former Vadodara MP and Congress candidate Satyajit Gaikwad said that in 2017 Madhu Gaikwad got around 60,000 votes while 1.10 lakh votes were cast against him. He claimed, the split in BJP’s votes would benefit the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party could get only around 1,500 votes here.

Madhu Srivastava’s son Deepak Srivastava said his father is a leader with mass base and is sure of winning for the seventh time. “The (election) symbol doesn’t matter, the work and welfare of the people is important to him and he will continue to do so,” he said.
