In the last years of eighties with the slogan ‘Raja nahi fakir hai, desh ki taqdeer hai’ Vishwanath Pratap Singh (VP Singh) became the 8th Prime Minister of the country. Earlier, he was the finance minister in Rajiv Gandhi’s government and surrounded his own government on the Bofors cannon brokerage issue. Left the post of minister and separated from the government. His decision made him stand in the category of leaders who were considered to have a clean image, but he also took a decision on which even those who liked him were divided into two parts.
When VP Singh, born in a Rajput family in Prayagraj (Allahabad) of Uttar Pradesh on June 25, 1931, became the Prime Minister, happiness was celebrated even in Nepal. This was the first time after independence that a leader of this society occupied the prime minister’s chair. Today is the death anniversary of former Prime Minister VP Singh, know interesting things related to him on this occasion…
when the messiah became
During his tenure as the Prime Minister, he took a big step. The recommendations of the Mandal Commission were implemented in the country. At that time almost half of the country’s population was OBC. With that decision of his, OBCs got reservation in jobs. The social and economic conditions of the backward community started changing. With this decision, VP Singh became the messiah of social justice, but the upper caste society started seeing him as divisive.
On seeing this, the upper caste society started getting agitated. The society which was once calling him a hero, started considering him as a villain. In the eyes of VP Singh, even though his decision was going to bring social justice, but in the eyes of the upper castes, it was called political selfishness.
In this way those who liked him were divided into two parts. He had become a hero in the eyes of the OBB class and a villain in the eyes of the upper castes. Many opposition parties including the BJP were angry with his decision. Now preparations had begun to oust him from power.
When BJP withdrew support
When VP Singh left the post of Finance Minister in Rajiv Gandhi’s government raising the issue of brokerage of Bofors and submarine defense deals, he neither had any political party nor any ideology. But due to his clean image and this step, he was covered across the country. Then elections were held across the country. Fought the election keeping the Bofors issue at the center. The Congress lost in that 1989 Lok Sabha election. VP Singh became the Prime Minister with the support of the BJP.
When the upper castes protested after the Mandal Commission was implemented, even the BJP and the opposition parties did not agree with that decision. As a result, a decision was taken to withdraw support and the United Front government, running on the crutches of the BJP, fell during the trust vote in Parliament.
