The Uttar Pradesh government was greatly impressed by his move and gave a grant of Rs 20 lakh in exchange for taking 26 per cent stake in his company. In this way HCL became the country’s first public-private partnership company.
First personal computer made in 1978
HCL had prepared its first computer before IBM and Apple. The computer made in 1978 was named HCL 8C. Rockwell PP 8 microprocessor was used in this. Before this, IBM 1401 computers were in use. The annual cost of its maintenance used to be very high. The computer that was being used by IBM used to cost Rs.5 lakh in a year, but the computer made by HCL cost only Rs.3 lakh.
expand business abroad
Seeing the possibilities of increasing the IT sector worldwide, Shiv Nadar planned to expand the business abroad. He moved to Singapore in 1979. Started IT service here. Started a firm named Far East Computer in Singapore. In the first time, HCL got a revenue of 3 crores. After this, the revenue started increasing by an average of Rs 10 lakh every year. In this way HCL became a company with annual revenue of more than 80 thousand crores. The company is doing business in 50 countries of the world and 169,000 Professionals are associated with the company.
While expanding the business, he saw that Indian youth needed training to do jobs in the IT sector. So he started SSN College of Engineering in Chennai. Apart from this, schools were also started in the villages of Uttar Pradesh. Not only this, he distributed computers to the children.
